This post will be updated regularly to reflect changes to our services.
UPDATE 5.11.2020: To protect the health of our staff and the community, all staff and all clients receiving our services are required to wear masks. We will ask clients who are not wearing a face covering to leave. We are also asking any community members who are feeling sick or who have been in contact with anyone displaying symptoms to please stay away for the safety of our neighbors and loved ones. Thank you for your understanding and for your cooperation in taking the necessary steps to protect our community and our most vulnerable citizens.
In order to comply with government mandates and guidelines, all services are currently available by appointment only. Our current services are:
- Adoptions by Appointment. If you are interested in adoption, please visit SavingAnimalsToday.org/adopt to see adoptable animals and complete an adoption questionnaire. We will contact you to arrange an appointment. During your appointment, we will be following CDC recommendations, including following 6-foot social distancing guidelines and we will be sanitizing our adoption area in between each guest. Please take care to follow instructions to protect your health and the health of our staff. Also note that we are currently experiencing high demand for adoptions and limited staff to perform them, so please be patient. It will take us longer than normal to contact you, but we are doing all that we can to serve you and to place our animals in your wonderful, loving homes.
- Vaccine Clinic. We are offering vaccines by appointment on April 25, May 2, May 9, and May 14. To make an appointment, please call our clinic at (970) 484-1861 and leave a message. If you leave a message, please keep an eye out for our return call from (970) 484-8516. Please note that you will be asked to make a non-refundable appointment fee ($10–$25) at the time of scheduling.
- Spay/Neuter Clinic. Our clinic is now accepting appointments for spay/neuter. Please note that we are experiencing high demand and call volume―we appreciate your patience. To make an appointment, please call our clinic at (970) 484-8516 and leave a message. If you leave a message, please keep an eye out for our return call from (970) 484-8516. For your appointment, please note that we have instituted “curbside” drop off, so please remain in your vehicle and follow staff instructions when dropping off your pet.
- Grooming Salon. Our Grooming Salon is open and accepting appointments, but we are not currently able to offer walk-in nail trims. Please call us at (970) 484-8516 to schedule an appointment. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through a large backlog of rescheduled appointments and messages. Please observe posted signs and instructions when bringing your pet to be groomed. We look forward to seeing you!
- Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry. Our Kibble distribution days on May 17 and June 4 will take place as scheduled. We will be using “drive through” distribution, so please stay in your vehicle and comply with posted signs and instructions.
We will continue to take extra steps to disinfect surfaces that come in contact with members of the public and perform extra cleaning in between guests at all of our facilities. We are taking all feasible precautions to ensure social distancing and prevent unnecessary person-to-person contact for all of our services.
As always, we are working hard for the animals. Here are some of the ways you can count on us to continue to serve the dogs, cats, and people in our community:
- We will continue to provide exemplary care for the animals in our shelter. Our excellent foster network is stepping up to allow as many of our animals as possible to stay in a home-like environment while we are closed, but rest assured that every animal in our care will receive the highest standard of care.
- We are continuing to accept transports of animals in need.
- We are assisting community members by phone and email.
- Community members can still apply for assistance from our PAL+, Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry, and Community Cat Programs through our website.
We hope that we can count on you as well. We need our community more than ever. You can support Animal Friends Alliance by making a donation through our website or becoming a monthly giving member through our Animal Advocate Club―even a small monthly gift can make a big impact! You can also donate supplies through our wishlist. If you follow us on Facebook, you can share our fundraisers and adoptable animals. The more help we have now, the better prepared we will be for whatever comes next. Thank you for your understanding throughout this changing situation and thank you for your support!
Now that we have more time on our hands, is there any way to help out that isn’t donating $?
That is a great question, Maureen, and thank you for wanting to help! We just shared some ways to help―including donating, but many of which cost nothing at all. You can see the post here.
Thank you again!
Can we still purchase things like dewormer/heartworm mess?
Yes, you can still buy topical dewormer and heartworm prevention during vaccine clinic days. If you don’t need to schedule vaccines and just need the medication, please call (970) 484-1861 and leave a message.
If you are in need of additional foster homes during this time. We would love to help out. Please let us know how to initiate the process. Thanks.
Hi Jenny,
We are absolutely still looking for fosters! You can find out more about fostering and apply to foster here. Our foster training is now completely online! Due to increased interested, it may take our foster team a little longer to get back to you, but we definitely need your help! Thank you for taking the first step toward fostering.
We have a year old barn cat. Can we still schedule a spay for her?
Hello Ryan,
Due to the state mandate prohibiting “non-essential” surgery, we cannot perform any spay/neuter surgeries until at least April 15. The restriction may be extended beyond that and it’s not clear when we will be able to begin public spay/neuter surgeries again. You can call our clinic at (970) 484-1861 and leave a message. We will give you a call back to either schedule her surgery or give you the most up-to-date information on our surgery schedule. Thank you for reaching out and for understanding the importance of spay/neuter!
Are you accepting new cats for adoption at this time?
Hi Paul,
If you are looking to rehome a cat, we have a page of rehoming resources that may be helpful. We are a limited admission shelter, so we can only bring in animals as our resources allow, but we are doing our best to help as many animals as possible, particularly during this challenging time. You can find more about our intake process here. If you complete the intake form, someone from our shelter will contact you as soon as we can.
Hi! Are you still taking in food donations or is that paused for now? We have 3 cases of Purina weight management food that our kitty no longer eats and don’t want it to go to waste!
Hi Jenn,
Yes, we will take that food! You can drop it off in the donation bins outside either of our shelters (2321 E Mulberry #1 or 2200 N Taft Hill Road). Thank you for thinking of us!
Is there an organization that can help me with a homeless cat. She (we think) hangs out at my sister’s office at Prospect and Welch. My sister works for a dentist and they feed her and the cat doesn’t get too close but always shows up. I have a cat trap and I help with Friends of Feral … I would love to get her somewhere so she doesn’t have to live outside Thanks
Hi Monica,
Thank you for reaching out. You can request assistance either by completing this form or by emailing petresources@savinganimalstoday.org.
I’ve been feeding a feral male cat outside but recently he has wanted in my home and got in through my garage and by using my 2 cats kitty door between the house and garage. He did not want to leave. I would like you to take him as I’ve become attached to him but hes an older beautiful long haired cat black and white. I know he needs neutering and grooming and medical check up. I don’t want him put to sleep. Phone 970,686,2735. please call as soon as possible. Thanks. Carol
Hi Carol,
Thank you for reaching out and for your concern for this cat. If you are looking for spay/neuter assistance or help from our Community Cat Program, you can apply for those programs here. If you are hoping to surrender this kitty, you can learn more about our intake process and complete our intake form here. I have also passed your message along to our Community Pet Resources Manager. Thank you again!
Hello. I’d like to get a kitten for my daughters birthday at the beginning of July. Are you still having your kitten adoption days?
Hi Moriah,
Due to restrictions on gatherings, we are not having our large mobile adoption events for the foreseeable future. However, we are still doing adoptions by appointment at our shelters. If you would like to adopt a kitten, the first step is to complete an adoption questionnaire and we will contact you to follow up!
Since the COVID 19 pandemic hit us in the gut from behind you have cancelled your volunteer drive and I am so willing to help out with any of the simple services you may have. I can handle the phones or work in some office or just play with the dogs that need attention. Please let me know if i can be of help. I have not had any illness in the past 6 months and will be happy to take your course if you ever start it up again.
Hi James,
I am going to pass you message on to our volunteer program (volunteer@savinganimalstoday.org). Thank you so much for wanting to help during this challenging time!
